Have you lost television stations in 2019?
A lot of people have, but before you go crawling back to the over-priced cable companies, it’s time to sit down and read this article. What happened was that a lot of television stations have decided to move to new broadcast frequencies.
It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, you need to rescan to get those channels back.
You can receive a lot of free TV channels, but there’s a massive migration going on behind the scenes. The transition first started in 2017, and it’s going to take until July 2020 before the entire transition is complete.
Congress authorized a spectrum auction.
The entire process is in the hands of the Federal Communications Commission, and they’re trying to free up some of the over-the-air broadcast frequencies. Why? They want to make more room for high-speed wireless services.
The auction is responsible for about 1,000 stations that will have to change their frequencies.

It’s going to be an interesting few years, and it’s almost over thankfully. I haven’t noticed the loss of any major channels, and I definitely welcome the addition of new channels. A new frequency will require you to rescan your channels.
Actually, I recommend a rescan every month or so.
A lot of the companies that make antennas have started to incorporate automatic updates which make a rescan easy.
The good news is that your channels will remain the same. If you plan to watch channel 5 to view your favorite show, the show will still be broadcast on the same channel despite the frequency change.
So, frequency changing will not have an impact on your normal viewing habits.
Stations will keep their same numbers, and the frequency update will not cause you any quality issues. You just need to rescan, and you’ll be able to continue saving money with your television antenna.
Rescanning for channels is very important. It’s another step that people seem to ignore, and it’s easy to get lazy and stop scanning. I used to never rescan until one day when I purchased a new antenna.
The new antenna provided me with a lot of new channels.
I thought it was the antenna, but then I plugged in my old antenna. I rescanned, and then I had all of these additional channels. It was great. But I could have been enjoying all of this additional content for months if I had just rescanned.
You see, there are some days when the frequency isn’t easy to find.
If you scan when it’s a cloudy or foggy day, you’ll also receive fewer channels. The goal is to perform your scan on a sunny day when the skies are clear. You’ll have the best opportunity to find channels when scanning on clear days.

You’ll actually be using your television to scan for new channels. This is a process that every antenna requires, and your television definitely has a scan option. But where is that scan option?
That’s a good question.
You’ll want to grab your television remote and locate one of these buttons:
You’ll want to be on the lookout for channel scan. Sometimes, you’ll need to really go through all of the menus to find this option. But there are some televisions that make it easy as possible to find this setting, and it will be right there in the setup menu.

Some manufacturers will have their own verbiage that they use to find these settings. The verbiage may be:
There may also be something called Channel Tuning or Channel Scan. If you ever find a manual scan option, you’ll want to avoid it if there’s an automatic option available. The automatic option will go through all of the frequencies and find the channels that are available in your area.
Autoscan or Autotune may be two other options that are available.
If you still cannot find these options, you may want to go and find the instruction manual for your television. You’ll want to look for the antenna section of the manual. When all else fails, you can look for these options online.
Someone online will be able to help you find exactly where the scan option is located.
Customer support from the manufacturer will be another option, but this is highly dependent on the actual manufacturer. I have tried calling customer support for one of the companies that made a television I purchased at a very cheap price, and no one picked up the phone. No one decided to listen to my voicemail or respond back to my question.
I understand the lack of support on these cheaper televisions, but that doesn’t mean that I wasn’t upset that no one actually called back.
Normally, people will perform a single scan. Don’t be one of these people. Make sure to scan at least twice to see if you detect any new channels that you may have missed.
But there may be an issue with some older antennas. The antennas may not be able to receive VHF or UHF well. Some channels may be moving from UHF to VHF, and if your antenna doesn’t support VHF or the reception is poor, you may need a new antenna.
You can tell the difference because VHF are channels between 1 and 13. UHF will be channels between 14 and 51.
I recommend purchasing an antenna that has good reviews and good support for both VHF and UHF. Check to see if you’ve lost any channels with the rescan and if you did, lack of support may be the culprit.
